Leon XIII — Quilty

LEO XIII

Leon X111, a French-built steel clipper, under the command of Captain Emilie Lucas with a cargo of wheat, was thrown on the rocks and wrecked in hurricane-force winds in Quilty, Co. Clare, on 2 October 1907. For two days local fishermen in currachs, in a very difficult and dangerous situation battled the storm and managed to rescue most of the crew. The remaining members of the crew, including the seriously injured captain, were taken off the crippled Leon XIII by the British warship, HMS Arrogant.
